Sleep Apnea and Headaches

At Randolph Center for Dental Excellence we know that dentistry doesn't just cover your teeth. We are experts in treating Sleep Apnea and Headaches as well.

What is Sleep Apnea?
It is a cessation of breath for 10 seconds or longer during sleep, usually caused by the collapse of soft tissue on the rear of the throat resulting in a blocked or narrowed airway.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Sleep Apnea??
•  Snoring
•  Gasping or choking during sleep
•  Excessive daytime sleepiness
•  Headaches
•  Irritability
•  Memory loss
•  Nightime grinding of teeth

What are the Possible Consequences of Untreated Sleep Apnea?
•  Increased risk for hypertension
•  Gastro-esophageal reflux disease
•  Stroke
•  Dementia
•  Sexual dysfunction
•  Shortened life span

How Do You Know If You Have Sleep Apnea?
You may prescreen yourself by taking one of the three self-tests found below.

If you feel that you may have sleep apnea, you should be evaluated through a sleep study, or polysomnogram. You may contact your primary care physician to pursue this, or we would be happy to refer you to a local sleep physician.

How is Sleep Apnea Treated?
Most traditional treatment has involved the use of CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure).

For mild to moderate sleep apnea, an oral appliance has been accepted as an equally viable method of treatment. We are pleased to offer the oral appliances in our practice to apnea sufferers. We are certified by the Sleep Optima Network and members of the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Disciplines.

Life Changing Dentistry
Headache disorders impose a recognizable burden on sufferers including sometimes-substantial personal suffering, impaired quality of life and financial cost. Repeated headache attacks, along with the constant fear of the next one, damage family life, social life and employment. The long-term effort of coping with a chronic headache disorder may also predispose the individual to other illnesses. For example, depression is three times more common in people with migraine or severe headaches, than in healthy individuals.

Before TruDenta, dentists were trained to fix your teeth, straighten your teeth, whiten your teeth and even replace your teeth. However, dentists were not trained or equipped to diagnose and treat symptoms caused by the complex forces that operate and control your head, mouth, jaw and teeth. With TruDenta, dentists are able to quickly examine your bite and range of motion. They can also show you the source of pain.

The head and mouth are home to a myriad of nerves, muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and bones, which affect not only your teeth, but your overall health and well-being. The forces, which are created by these elements, when not properly balanced, can result in various symptoms. These include chronic head, neck and face pain, clenching, grinding, tinnitus, broken teeth, clicking/popping of the jaw and numerous other symptoms.

TruDenta treatments are painless, pleasant and require no drugs or needles. Utilizing systems and methods perfected in sports medicine, Dr. Cheryl Freeman may be able to rapidly and painlessly resolve issues from which many patients have been suffering for years.
