Signs and Symptoms of TMD

Posted on 12/10/2021 by Dr. Cheryl Freeman
Signs and Symptoms of TMDTemporomandibular disorder, or TMD, refers to abnormalities in the jaw muscles and nerves associated with the temporomandibular joints. These joints, which are the crux of the issue, are located on either side of your face, where the skull connects to the jaw. The temporomandibular joints can atrophy and misfire, causing problems in your jaw. It is important to understand the signs and symptoms of TMD.

What to Look For if You Suspect TMD

Most people wrongly assume that someone with a TMD condition will experience discomfort in the temporomandibular joint on a regular basis. This is not the case. Discomfort from TMD can be occasional and even temporary. Some patients relay to us that their pain comes and goes, almost cyclically, without much intervention. Other symptoms may include earaches and hearing problems, sore cheeks, headaches, and vertigo. It is important to understand the signs and symptoms of TMD.

Make Your Appointment Today to Talk About TMD

If you have any of these symptoms, we should examine your face and jaw. This can be done at your next routine dental exam and cleaning. We will feel your jaw joints and check for areas of discomfort. We will also listen for clicking and popping sounds when you exercise your jaw. Lastly, we will evaluate your range of motion while you open and close your mouth. We may take x-rays if we suspect arthritis in conjunction with TMD.

We are here to help you and want to ease your mind about TMD. If treatment is needed, we can talk through those options as well as how to mitigate discomfort on a daily basis. If you are experiencing discomfort in your jaw, we encourage you to make an appointment today to talk about TMD. We are here to help you.
