3 Reasons Why You Should Avoid Chewing On Ice in the Summer
Posted on 7/12/2021 by Dr. Cheryl Freeman
It is a common habit for people to crunch on ice. Just like chewing gum, crunching on ice keeps your mouth busy while you engage in other activities. You might find it irresistible to chew ice after drinking your favorite drinks on a hot summer. As much as ice is sweet, chewing on it can cause damage to your teeth. Therefore, there is every reason you should avoid chewing ice in the summer.
Tooth Enamel Damage
The enamel is the outer layer of your teeth. Tasked with protecting the tooth, the enamel is the hardest tissue in your body. It protects the tooth from sugars and foods that can damage the teeth. Without this covering, your tooth could easily break and decompose. When you chew on ice, it could damage the enamel. As a result, you will experience tooth pain and increased cases of tooth sensitivity. This is because the dentin beneath the enamel will be exposed, making the tooth sensitive.
Cracked or Chipped Teeth
If you bite on hard ice, you could crack your tooth. As much as the enamel is the hardest tissue in your body, it can crack due to excessive pressure. A chipped tooth is very uncomfortable and will lead to cosmetic damage. This is why it is important to avoid chewing on ice in the summer.
Causes Damage to Tooth Fillings
If you have dental appliances like tooth fillings, chewing on ice can damage them. As you chew on ice, you slowly dislodge them and break them down completely. Chewing on ice can also make dentures very uncomfortable. Excessive pressure on them can also cause bleeding gums. If you want to keep your dental appliances safe, avoid chewing on hard substances like ice. Visit our offices for more information on the dangers of chewing on ice.
