Dangers of Not Preventing Bruxism

Posted on 6/21/2021 by Dr. Cheryl Freeman
Dangers of Not Preventing BruxismIf you have bruxism, you need to address the dental condition immediately. That is because bruxism can do some real damage to the teeth. Preventing the condition is the first step toward better oral health.

What Is Bruxism?

Bruxism is a condition where the patient clenches and grinds their teeth, especially at night. It normally results from stress. Therefore, treating the condition also means reducing the stress in your life so you won't grind and clench your teeth. We can also suggest that a patient wear a mouth guard to keep him from bruxing in his or her sleep. If you don't take measures to prevent the problem, you can experience a great deal of damage to the gums and teeth.

What Can Happen If Bruxism Is Not Treated?

If bruxism is left untreated, a patient can experience broken teeth and fillings, cracked teeth, and problems with dental decay, gum infections, and severe erosion. Usually, the type of erosion a bruxism patient experiences is due to dental attrition or rubbing the occlusal surfaces of the teeth. If the attrition is severe, you can lose one-third or more of your crown and drastically degrade the chewing surfaces of your teeth. This can make it quite hard to eat.

An Ounce of Prevention

As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you have bruxism, you need to address the problem so it can be properly treated. We can review the condition and determine whether it is mild, moderate, or critical in nature. By taking this approach, we can figure out the best therapy. In cases of severe bruxism, you may need to obtain surgery. Otherwise, we will work with other medical or health professionals to reduce any stress you are experiencing and support your care with devices, such as mouth guards, to protect your teeth.

Do you have bruxism? If so, we can help you in improving your dental health and repairing and reducing the problems associated with the condition. Give us a call today for an examination and consultation.
