There are many news reports suggesting a strong link between unmanaged periodontal disease and heart disease. I wanted to share some thoughts from two of the most respected experts on heart disease, Bale and Doneen. Dr. Bradley Bale and Amy Doneen, in their book, Beat the Heart Attack Gene, say “ it appears the oral systemic connection is actually even more important than we realized… optimal dental care and periodontal therapy is crucial to save lives and prevent heart attacks and ischemic stroke.” They reference a study by Dr. Tanja Pessi, published in the AHA journal Circulation, which analyzed the actual culprit blood clots that were causative of heart attacks and found that 75% of them had oral pathogens that cause dental decay and cavities and 35% contained bacteria that cause periodontal disease. Bottom line- along with exercise and healthy eating, include regular dental care on your strategy for preventing heart attacks.
