New Technology Spotlight: Oral DNA

Posted on 9/25/2018 by Dr. Cheryl Freeman
When new technology can make our treatment more comfortable or predictable, it is always worth looking in to. Predictability is what Oral DNA lab offers with its periodontal testing. With a simple saliva sample, we can now identify specific periodontal pathogens so that we can target those particular bacteria and customize our treatment. We have now begun to routinely incorporate this test into our treatment plans for advanced periodontal disease, since advanced periodontitis threatens the long-term health of both the teeth and the individual as a whole. Oral DNA offers many other tests as well, which can likewise be ordered from a saliva sample. Most of us are familiar with DNA testing in solving crimes, such as on CSI. Salivary DNA testing can identify genetic susceptibility to periodontal disease as well as inflammation, which is a critical factor in periodontal disease diabetes, and cardiovascular disease severity. Tests are also available to detect the presence of Candida ,herpes simplex, virus, and human papilloma virus (which directly increases oral cancer risk)
