Signs & Symptoms of acid reflux:

Posted on 3/30/2016 by Dr. Cheryl Freeman
In an earlier blog post I addressed the signs and symptoms of acid reflux and made some suggestions for management of this destructive process. However, there are other contributors to dental acid erosion. I would like to share some information about this as well as summarize my earlier thoughts.

There are very specific manifestations of acid erosion in teeth, including dissolution of the enamel at the gumline, "cupping" of the enamel on cusp tips, and thinning of enamel resulting in "yellowed" teeth, If you have been told you show signs of dental acid erosion, here are some things to consider.

Do You:
Have a history of acid reflux or GERD?
Have a history of bulimia?
Have sleep apnea (which can contribute to reflux)?
Suck on citrus fruits or candy?
Swish soda, coffee, fruit juices, energy drinks or alcoholic beverages, holding them in your mouth for prolonged periods of time, or sip over long periods of time?
Have something acidic in your daily?
Have something you regularly rub on your gums?
Use tobacco products (including dip, chewing tobacco)?
Chew on cigars?
Use an asthma inhaler?

Chronic acid reflux can lead to Barrett's esophagitis or esophageal cancer. It is very important to consult with your physician if you feel you may have this. Many cases are classified as "silent GERD"; where the patient is not aware of symptoms, and most of the reflux occurs at night which is often when teeth are more susceptible to damage.

Signs of Reflux/GERD Are:
Frequent heartburn;
A bad taste in your mouth or sour breath upon awakening;
Needing to sleep in an elevated position to avoid painful burning in your chest or throat;
Food or drink that "comes back up" easily.
